City of Rocks

City of Rocks is a New Mexico State Park located in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert. Along Highway 66, the park is conveniently situated between the towns of Silver City and Deming. After spending time exploring Silver City (and enjoying a charming, fresh meal at the Corner Kitchen downtown), City of Rocks State Park was a convenient place to camp nearby. It offers much more, though, than just an easy stop for the night.

Rock formations in City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico

Nearly 35 million years ago, a massive volcanic eruption created rock formations and pinnacles which, through centuries of erosion, now tower like architectural structures. The area between the rock formations resembles lanes or alleys through these rock “buildings”. Hence, City of Rocks.

A special component for campers (tent, RV, or other rig) is that sites are nestled strategically among the rocks. Campers have their own little “city street” in the neighborhood to themselves. Paths meander through and among the rocks, sporadic trees provide shade, and the landscape is otherworldly. The setting makes for a truly unique camping experience, best enjoyed for more than one night to take advantage of hiking, birding, and star gazing in one of the darkest area’s of the country.

A gem in the park is the Desert Botanical Garden area. It showcases Chihuahuan native plants and houses beautiful specimens (resembling creatures) like Cow’s Tongue Cactus and Barrel Cactus. The desert plants, with their amazing defenses and adaptations, add to the mysterious landscape and to the visitor experience.
